How do I calculate book spine width?

Multiply pages per inch (PPI) of your paper stock into the page count: spine = page count ÷ PPI. A 200-page book on 50# white offset (444 PPI) is about 0.45 in (11.4 mm). The calculator does this and adds board thickness for hardcovers.

What is PPI (pages per inch)?

Pages per inch is how many printed pages of a given paper stack into one inch of thickness. Heavier or bulkier stock has a lower PPI and a thicker spine. Ask your printer for the PPI of your exact stock for the most accurate spine.

Do saddle-stitched booklets have a spine?

No real spine — saddle-stitched booklets are folded and stapled, so the calculator reports a 0 mm spine. Use perfect or case binding when you need a printable spine.

Does this match KDP spine requirements?

It uses the same page-count × per-page-thickness method. KDP white paper is about 444 PPI and cream about 400 PPI. Always confirm against your print provider's template before finalizing.
