Use Grid for the second stage, not Expert Grid, because Grid step-and-repeat adapts to any booklet page count. SRA4 is exactly half of SRA3, so the printed SRA3 sheet cuts into two identical SRA4 booklet stacks before folding and stitching.

Input: A5 portrait PDF, sequential reading order, preferably with 3mm bleed. After printing, cut SRA3 to two SRA4 stacks, fold to A5, then saddle stitch.

Input: Single-page PDF or image at the full poster size (e.g., 24x36 inches or A0). If an image imports at the wrong size, set the true size in the Poster tool. 300 DPI for close-viewing, 150 DPI acceptable for distance viewing.

Glossary

Backing Up
Printing the reverse side of a sheet that has already been printed on its front. Proper backing-up requires precise front-to-back registration so that page elements on both sides align through the substrate.
Bleed
The area of ink coverage that extends beyond the trim edge of a printed piece, typically 3 mm (0.125 in). Bleed ensures that no unprinted white edge appears after the sheet is cut to its finished size.
CIP4 / JDF
CIP4 (International Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press, and Postpress) defines the Job Definition Format (JDF), an XML-based standard for exchanging job specifications between prepress software, presses, and finishing equipment.
Collating Marks
Small printed marks that appear in a stair-step pattern along the spine of gathered signatures. When signatures are stacked in the correct order, the marks form an unbroken diagonal line; a break or duplicate reveals a missing or duplicated signature.
Color Separation
The process of decomposing a full-color image into individual ink channels, typically Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK), each of which is output as a separate plate or film. Spot colors require additional separations.
Creep
The progressive outward shift of inner pages in a saddle-stitched booklet caused by paper thickness. As sheets are nested inside each other, inner pages protrude slightly further at the face trim, requiring compensation during imposition.
Crop Marks
Short lines printed at the four corners of a page to indicate where the sheet should be trimmed to its finished size. Also called trim marks. They typically extend 3–10 mm beyond the trim edge into the slug area.
Die Line
A vector path that defines the shape of a custom cut, crease, or perforation for die-cutting equipment. Die lines are usually placed on a dedicated spot-color layer (e.g., CutContour) and do not print.
Dot Gain
The optical and physical enlargement of halftone dots when ink is absorbed by the substrate during printing. A 50% halftone screen may print as 65–75% on uncoated stock. Compensation curves are applied in prepress to counteract the effect.
Duplex
Printing on both sides of a sheet in a single pass through the press or printer. Also refers to a substrate made of two bonded layers. In digital printing, duplex mode eliminates manual sheet flipping.
Flexographic Distortion
The dimensional change that occurs when a flexible photopolymer plate is wrapped around a printing cylinder. The plate stretches in the circumferential direction, requiring prepress compensation (typically 2–5%) so the printed image matches the intended dimensions.
Gang Run
Combining multiple different jobs or images on a single press sheet to maximize material usage and reduce per-unit cost. A gang-run layout is optimized with nesting or strip-packing algorithms to minimize waste.
Gripper Edge
The leading edge of the sheet that is held by the mechanical grippers as it feeds through the press. Typically 10–15 mm of non-printable area must be reserved along this edge.
Gutter
The space between adjacent pages or panels on an imposed sheet. In booklet work, the gutter is the inner margin along the spine where pages are bound. In step-and-repeat layouts, gutters provide clearance for cutting and folding.
Imposition
The arrangement of multiple pages on a press sheet so that, after printing, folding, and trimming, the pages appear in the correct reading order. Imposition planning accounts for page sequence, sheet work style, fold scheme, and finishing requirements.
Kiss Cut
A die-cutting technique that cuts through the face stock of a label or sticker but leaves the backing liner intact. This allows individual labels to be peeled from the carrier sheet without separating completely.
Knockout
A prepress technique where the background color or image is removed (knocked out) beneath an overlapping foreground object so that only the foreground ink prints. The opposite of overprinting. Misregistration in knockouts can produce visible white gaps.
Linearized PDF
A PDF file organized so that the first page can be displayed before the entire file has been downloaded. Also called "fast web view." The cross-reference table and first-page objects are placed at the start of the file.
N-up
Placing N pages on a single sheet. Common configurations include 2-up, 4-up, 8-up, and 16-up. The N-up factor determines the sheet utilization and the number of cuts required after printing.
OMR Marks
Optical Mark Recognition marks are machine-readable marks printed on sheets that allow automated finishing equipment (cutters, folders, inserters) to identify job boundaries, verify sequence, and trigger operations without manual intervention.
Overprint
Printing one ink layer on top of another without knocking out the underlying color. Commonly used for black text over color backgrounds to avoid misregistration gaps. Overprint preview in PDF viewers simulates the on-press result.
PDF/X
A family of ISO standards (PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3, PDF/X-4, etc.) that constrain PDF features to ensure reliable print reproduction. PDF/X files require embedded fonts, an output intent, and restrict transparency and RGB color depending on the conformance level.
Perfecting
A press configuration or technique where the sheet is printed on one side, then immediately flipped and printed on the other side in the same pass. A perfecting press (or perfector) has two impression cylinders arranged to print both sides without re-feeding.
Quiet Zone
The clear, unprinted margin surrounding a barcode or QR code that ensures reliable scanning. The required width is specified by the barcode symbology standard, typically at least 10 times the narrowest bar for 1D codes or 4 modules for QR.
Registration Marks
Targets printed on a press sheet, typically a crosshair inside concentric circles, used to verify that all color separations (CMYK and spot colors) are aligned precisely during plate mounting and on press.
Rich Black
A deep, dense black achieved by printing additional CMY inks beneath the black (K) channel. A common recipe is C60 M40 Y40 K100. Rich black avoids the washed-out appearance of 100% K alone on large solids, but must stay within total ink coverage limits.
Saddle Stitch
A binding method where folded signatures are nested inside one another and stapled through the spine fold with wire stitches. Suitable for booklets up to approximately 64 pages, after which creep and bulk make perfect binding preferable.
Score
A crease pressed into a sheet to create a controlled fold line. Scoring compresses the fiber on the fold line, preventing cracking on heavy or coated stocks. In finishing, scores may be applied by a rotary scoring wheel or a flatbed die.
Sheetwise
A press work style where the front and back of the sheet are printed using two different plates (or plate sets), with the same gripper edge for both sides. Each sheet side has its own imposition layout. Contrast with work-and-turn.
Signature
A single press sheet that, once printed, folded, and trimmed, becomes a section of a book or booklet. A 16-page signature is the most common in book printing and results from three right-angle folds of an SRA2-sized sheet.
Slug Area
The non-printable zone outside the bleed area reserved for production information such as file names, color bars, registration marks, and job numbers. The slug area is trimmed off during finishing and does not appear in the final product.
Thru-Cut
A die-cutting technique that cuts completely through the substrate and any backing material, separating individual pieces entirely. Contrast with kiss cut, which leaves the liner intact.
Total Ink Coverage
The sum of all CMYK ink percentages at a given point, expressed as a maximum percentage (e.g., 300%). Exceeding the substrate's total ink limit causes drying problems, set-off, and blocking. Typical limits range from 240% (uncoated) to 340% (coated).
Trapping
A prepress technique that slightly overlaps abutting colors to compensate for misregistration on press. A thin spread (lighter object enlarged) or choke (darker background reduced) prevents visible white gaps between adjacent ink areas.
TrimBox
One of five page geometry boxes defined in the PDF specification. The TrimBox defines the intended finished size of the page after all cutting is complete. Imposition software reads the TrimBox to determine page placement, bleed extent, and mark positions.
Work-and-Tumble
A press work style where the sheet is printed on one side, then flipped along its short edge (tail to gripper) and printed again using the same plate. The sheet is then cut in half to produce two identical copies. Uses one plate set instead of two, but changes the gripper edge on the second pass.
Work-and-Turn
A press work style where the sheet is printed on one side, then flipped along its long edge (left to right) and printed again using the same plate. The sheet is then cut in half to produce two identical copies. The gripper edge remains the same for both passes, improving front-to-back register.
