Why are tri-fold panels not all equal?

In a letter/roll fold one panel folds inside the others, so it must be a couple of millimetres narrower to tuck in without buckling. The calculator shortens the rolled-in panel and keeps the two outer panels full width.

What is the difference between a roll fold and a Z-fold?

A roll (letter) fold wraps panels inside each other, so the inner panel is shortened. A Z-fold (accordion) folds in alternating directions, so all three panels are equal width. The calculator handles both.

How much should I shorten the inner panel?

Most print shops shorten the rolled-in panel by about 1.5–3 mm. The calculator defaults to 2 mm and lets you adjust it to match your stock thickness and machine.

A gate fold has two outer wings that fold inward to meet at the centre, like doors. Each wing is roughly a quarter of the width and slightly shortened so the edges meet without overlapping.
