ALAP InBooklet (and the bundled InBooklet SE) was a booklet and n-up imposition plug-in for Adobe InDesign, made by A Lowly Apprentice Production. It is legacy software: after Quark acquired ALAP in December 2005, the InDesign plug-in line was discontinued in 2006, InBooklet SE shipped only through InDesign CS2, and Adobe folded basic imposition into InDesign itself as Print Booklet from CS3 onward. PDF Press takes the everyday imposition and prepress jobs that shops still run and moves them into the browser with nothing to install and no Adobe app required. The choice is between keeping an old InDesign install alive to run a discontinued plug-in and a maintained, no-install browser workspace with ready templates.

The short version
Choose PDF Press if you want to impose booklets, n-up, step-and-repeat and cut-and-stack online, on maintained software, without Adobe InDesign or a discontinued plug-in—and you value ready templates and a live preview. Choose ALAP InBooklet if you still run an older Adobe InDesign version with InBooklet installed and need to keep that exact legacy booklet workflow untouched.
What to know before you choose ALAP InBooklet
These trade-offs may be worth accepting for the right production workflow. Check them against how your team actually works before you commit.
Requires Adobe InDesign
InBooklet is not a standalone app — it is a plug-in that only runs inside a paid Adobe InDesign license. Without a compatible, often older, InDesign install there is no way to open it. PDF Press runs in any modern browser and needs no Adobe app at all.
Discontinued, legacy software
ALAP's InDesign plug-ins were discontinued in 2006 after Quark acquired the company, and InBooklet SE was last bundled with InDesign CS2. It is not sold or supported today, and Adobe's built-in Print Booklet replaced it from CS3. PDF Press is actively maintained and updated in the browser.
Limited, old-version compatibility
Because it targets InDesign versions from roughly twenty years ago, InBooklet is unlikely to install or run on current InDesign or modern macOS/Windows releases. PDF Press opens the same current version on any supported browser and OS.
From installed software to one browser workspace
Why desktop users switch to PDF Press
ALAP InBooklet can be the right choice for a fixed production setup. But installed software adds compatibility and maintenance checkpoints that an online browser workflow avoids.
ALAP InBooklet depends on a paid Adobe InDesign license (and a compatible, often older, InDesign version). After an operating-system or host-app upgrade, a team may need a compatible release, patch, or reinstall before production continues. PDF Press is not tied to that desktop integration chain.
2
No workstation-by-workstation upkeep
Installed software must be deployed, activated, updated, and troubleshot on each production workstation. PDF Press delivers updates through the browser, so there is no desktop package or plug-in to maintain on every device.
3
One current version across devices
Mixed desktop versions can create workflow drift between operators and machines. Supported browsers open the same current version of PDF Press, with the same tools and production-template library.
