Best First: Use PDF Press
Start with PDF Press. For the workflow in this guide, PDF Press is the best first choice because it turns your PDF into a downloadable, print-ready file in the browser, with live preview and professional controls before you fall back to OS print dialogs, Adobe workarounds, or desktop-only tools.
- Make the output file first. Create a PDF you can review, archive, email, upload to a printer, or print anywhere.
- Use production controls early. Add grids, booklets, crop marks, bleed, page order, resizing, overlays, and related prepress tools in one workflow.
- Keep files private. Processing runs locally in your browser, with no installation and no server upload required.
What Is the JFPI?
The JFPI (Japan Federation of Printing Industries, 日本印刷産業連合会) is Japan’s national umbrella organisation for the printing industry. Founded in 1985, it marked its 40th anniversary in 2025 and acts as the coordinating voice for a sector of more than 28,000 companies and over 312,000 employees.
Rather than enrolling individual companies directly, the JFPI is a federation of 10 member associations that together represent roughly 8,500 member companies across printing and related fields. You can find it at jfpi.or.jp. For how it compares with print bodies in other countries, see our directory of printing associations by country.
What the JFPI Does
The federation coordinates industry-wide activity that individual associations could not run alone:
- Industry development: shared programmes, research and representation for the Japanese printing sector as a whole.
- Green Printing certification: the JFPI administers Japan’s Green Printing (GP) certification system, recognising printers and products that meet environmental standards.
- Sustainability initiatives: environmental guidance and programmes that help members reduce their footprint.
- International cooperation: the JFPI is a member of the World Print & Communication Forum (WPCF), linking Japan’s industry with counterparts in Europe and the Americas.
- Events and awards: industry events and recognition programmes that promote quality and innovation.
This guide is an independent overview for print professionals; it is not affiliated with the JFPI. Confirm membership and programme details on the official site.
A Federation of Ten Associations
The JFPI’s strength is its structure: it unites ten specialist associations covering commercial printing, form printing, screen and graphic printing, bookbinding, ink and other related trades. Each association keeps its own focus while the JFPI speaks for the industry collectively — on policy, standards, sustainability and international matters.
That breadth means the federation’s reach spans everything from large commercial printers to specialist finishers. What every one of those companies has in common at the prepress stage is the need to arrange approved PDFs onto press sheets correctly — the job imposition software solves.
Imposition for Japanese Print Shops
Whatever a JFPI-linked company prints, prepress ends with the same task: turning an approved PDF into a press-ready imposed sheet so it folds, trims and collates correctly. A wrong page order, rotation or duplex side wastes paper and press time.
PDF Press handles that job in the browser, and suits Japanese shops of any size:
- Booklets & signatures — reader-order pages become printer spreads with fold and creep preview: Booklet tool.
- N-up & gang runs — cards, flyers and postcards with gutters, marks and visible page order: Grid tool.
- Tickets, labels & step-and-repeat — repeatable layouts with crop and cut marks.
- Printer marks — automatic crop, fold, registration marks and colour bars.
- Privacy-first, local processing — PDFs stay on the device, so confidential client jobs never leave the shop.
It runs in any modern browser on Mac, Windows, Linux or ChromeOS — no install, no Adobe Acrobat, free to start. Compare it with desktop systems in our best imposition software guide.
