Best First: Use PDF Press
Start with PDF Press. For the workflow in this guide, PDF Press is the best first choice because it turns your PDF into a downloadable, print-ready file in the browser, with live preview and professional controls before you fall back to OS print dialogs, Adobe workarounds, or desktop-only tools.
- Make the output file first. Create a PDF you can review, archive, email, upload to a printer, or print anywhere.
- Use production controls early. Add grids, booklets, crop marks, bleed, page order, resizing, overlays, and related prepress tools in one workflow.
- Keep files private. Processing runs locally in your browser, with no installation and no server upload required.
What Is PRINTING United Alliance?
PRINTING United Alliance is the largest and most comprehensive printing trade association in the United States. It represents roughly 6,000+ member companies spanning commercial print, graphics and industrial, apparel and textile decorating, packaging, and sign segments — effectively the whole breadth of American print.
You’ll find it at printing.org. It provides advocacy, standards, training, market research and events, and owns significant industry media assets. For how it compares to bodies in other countries, see our directory of printing associations by country.
How It Formed: SGIA + PIA
PRINTING United Alliance was created on 1 May 2020 through the merger of two major bodies:
- SGIA — the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association, which began as a screen-printing organisation in 1948.
- PIA — Printing Industries of America, the long-standing commercial-print association.
Legally, PIA’s entity dissolved and SGIA survived under the new PRINTING United Alliance name. This is an important accuracy point: “Printing Industries of America” is no longer a current organisation — if you see it referenced, it means the pre-2020 body now part of the Alliance.
In March 2021, the colour-standards organisation Idealliance — owner of the G7® and GRACoL® programs — also merged in, and now operates as a division within the Alliance while keeping its own certification identity. Separately, the technology-supplier body APTech (formerly NPES) remains the distinct association for equipment and software makers.
What Members Get
Membership bundles the services a US print business relies on:
- Advocacy: federal and state government representation on regulation, tariffs, labor and postal issues.
- Standards & certification: access to G7®/GRACoL® colour standards through the Idealliance division.
- Training & research: workforce development, benchmarking data and market intelligence.
- PRINTING United Expo: the largest printing event in the Americas, where equipment, software and workflow vendors exhibit each year.
To join, apply through the official membership pages at printing.org and confirm current tiers directly. This guide is an independent overview and is not affiliated with the Alliance.
Imposition for US Print Shops
Whatever segment a PRINTING United member works in, prepress ends the same way: an approved PDF has to be imposed onto a press sheet so it folds, trims and collates correctly. Errors in page order, rotation, duplex side or creep translate directly into wasted substrate and press time.
PDF Press handles that job in the browser:
- Booklets & signatures with fold and creep preview — Booklet tool.
- N-up & gang runs for cards, flyers and postcards — Grid tool.
- Tickets, labels & step-and-repeat with crop and cut marks.
- Printer marks — crop, fold, registration and colour bars, positioned automatically.
- Local processing — files stay on the device, suitable for confidential and regulated jobs.
It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and ChromeOS with no install and no Acrobat, free to start — a fast first tool for shops that don’t want another per-seat desktop licence. Compare it with desktop systems in our best imposition software guide.
