Quick Comparison

"N-up" is simply how many copies of your page get tiled onto one larger press sheet before cutting. The number in front — 2, 4, 8, 16 — is that count. The fastest way to choose is to start from the finished size you need, because each step up halves the item size on the same sheet. The table below assumes an A4 (or US Letter) press sheet; the pattern is identical on any stock.

What the Number Actually Means (the Sheet Math)

The N-up count is governed by one relationship: how many times your item area divides into the printable sheet area. On ISO A-series stock the maths is clean because every size is exactly half the one above it, so doubling the up-count simply moves you down one A-size:

  • A4 sheet, item = A5 → 2-up
  • A4 sheet, item = A6 → 4-up
  • A4 sheet, item = A7 → 8-up
  • A4 sheet, item = A8 → 16-up

For non-ISO pieces (a 3.5 × 2 in business card, a 90 × 50 mm label) the count is floor(sheet width ÷ item width) × floor(sheet height ÷ item height) after you subtract margins and the gutters between items. A US Letter sheet fits about 10 standard business cards straight, or more when rotated — which is exactly the kind of packing the imposition engine optimises for you rather than by hand.

Two practical consequences follow from the maths: (1) the higher the up-count, the smaller each item and the less forgiving the trim; and (2) an item that doesn't tile evenly leaves waste, so sometimes 8-up on a tighter sheet beats a wasteful 4-up.

When to Use Each

2-up

Use 2-up when the finished piece is large — A5 flyers, half-fold greeting cards, or two copies of an A5 document per A4 sheet. It's also the natural layout for a simple saddle-stitch booklet spread. There's little trimming risk because the cut lines are few and far apart. If you're folding rather than cutting, 2-up is almost always the answer.

4-up

4-up is the workhorse for postcards, invitations, and greeting cards (≈A6). You get four times the yield of a single with only two cut passes, and double-sided registration is still easy. This is usually the sweet spot for short-run card work on digital presses.

8-up

Step to 8-up for tickets, tags, coupons, and place cards (≈A7). Yield doubles again, but so does cut precision: a 0.5 mm drift is invisible on 2-up and obvious across an 8-up sheet. Add crop marks and keep consistent gutters so the guillotine has a clean reference on every cut line.

16-up

16-up is for the smallest, highest-volume items: business cards, labels, and stickers (≈A8). At this density, bleed and crop marks are not optional — every item that touches an edge needs 3 mm of bleed so trimming variance never exposes white. This is also where a purpose-built layout beats a manual grid, because gutters, bleed, and mark placement all have to be consistent across 16 tiles.

Quality & Finishing Trade-offs

Choosing the up-count is really a trade between yield and trim tolerance. As the count rises:

  • Bleed matters more. Small items packed tightly leave no room for error — extend artwork 3 mm past every trim edge from 8-up upward.
  • Gutters do double duty. A small gap between items gives the cutter a lane and prevents one card's bleed from printing into its neighbour.
  • Crop marks earn their keep. At 2-up you can eyeball it; at 16-up the operator needs a mark on every cut line.
  • Cumulative drift. Guillotine tolerance that's negligible on a 2-up sheet stacks across a 16-up sheet, so centre your content with a safe margin.

The rule of thumb: use the lowest up-count that still fills the sheet economically. It's the cheapest insurance against trim problems, and it keeps double-sided registration simple.

How to Impose Any N-up in PDF Press
