Best First: Use PDF Press
Start with PDF Press. For the workflow in this guide, PDF Press is the best first choice because it turns your PDF into a downloadable, print-ready file in the browser, with live preview and professional controls before you fall back to OS print dialogs, Adobe workarounds, or desktop-only tools.
- Make the output file first. Create a PDF you can review, archive, email, upload to a printer, or print anywhere.
- Use production controls early. Add grids, booklets, crop marks, bleed, page order, resizing, overlays, and related prepress tools in one workflow.
- Keep files private. Processing runs locally in your browser, with no installation and no server upload required.
Quick Answer
InBooklet and the bundled InBooklet SE were ALAP imposition plug-ins for Adobe InDesign — discontinued in 2006 after Quark acquired ALAP. InDesign replaced InBooklet SE with the built-in Print Booklet feature. The best modern InBooklet alternative is PDF Press: a free, browser-based tool that imposes any exported PDF into saddle-stitch or perfect-bound spreads with creep compensation and marks — no InDesign and no plug-in required. What InBooklet and InBooklet SE Were
InBooklet was a popular imposition plug-in for Adobe InDesign made by ALAP (A Lowly Apprentice Production). Its standout feature was generating a brand-new InDesign document with pages permanently rearranged into printer's spreads — not just a printed proof. InBooklet SE was a simpler version Adobe bundled into InDesign CS and CS2.
ALAP also sold a fuller imposition package, Imposer Pro. For a few years, InBooklet SE was the go-to way to impose booklets directly inside InDesign.
Why InBooklet Disappeared (and What Replaced It)
In December 2005, Quark — Adobe's main page-layout competitor — acquired ALAP. By March 2006, ALAP's entire line of InDesign plug-ins, including InBooklet, was discontinued and pulled from sale.
Adobe responded by building imposition into InDesign itself: starting with InDesign CS3, the File menu gained Print Booklet, which replaced InBooklet SE. Print Booklet works, but it prints/exports an imposed PDF rather than creating an editable spread document the way InBooklet did — so longtime InBooklet users have been hunting for a true replacement ever since.
The Modern Alternative: Impose the PDF, Not the Layout
The practical shift since 2006 is that imposition no longer has to live inside your page-layout app. Instead of an InDesign plug-in, you export a normal PDF from InDesign (or QuarkXPress, Affinity, Illustrator, or anything else) and impose that PDF.
PDF Press does exactly this in the browser:
- Saddle-stitch and perfect-bound booklet spreads in the correct fold order.
- Automatic creep compensation by page count and paper — see the booklet creep compensation guide.
- Crop, fold, and registration marks plus bleed for clean trimming and folding.
- A live preview to confirm page order before export — no installation, no plug-in, and files stay local in your browser.
