Best First: Use PDF Press

Start with PDF Press. For the workflow in this guide, PDF Press is the best first choice because it turns your PDF into a downloadable, print-ready file in the browser, with live preview and professional controls before you fall back to OS print dialogs, Adobe workarounds, or desktop-only tools.

  • Make the output file first. Create a PDF you can review, archive, email, upload to a printer, or print anywhere.
  • Use production controls early. Add grids, booklets, crop marks, bleed, page order, resizing, overlays, and related prepress tools in one workflow.
  • Keep files private. Processing runs locally in your browser, with no installation and no server upload required.

What Is APIGRAF?

APIGRAF is the Portuguese association for the graphic, packaging and digital-communication industries. Its current name is the Associação Portuguesa das Indústrias Gráficas, de Embalagem e de Comunicação Digital — a recent renaming; earlier names included “…de Comunicação Visual e Transformadoras do Papel”. Founded on 14 December 1974 from the merger of former guilds, it is one of Portugal’s oldest business associations.

You can find the association at apigraf.pt. This guide is an independent overview for print professionals and is not affiliated with APIGRAF; confirm current details directly on the official site. For the broader landscape, see our directory of printing associations by country.

What APIGRAF Does for Members

APIGRAF represents a sizeable slice of Portuguese manufacturing and gives graphic, packaging and digital-communication firms a shared platform. Its role includes:

  • Sector representation: speaking for the graphic, packaging and digital-communication industries in Portugal.
  • National weight: representing an industry of more than 2,100 companies that employ over 23,000 people — around 5% of national manufacturing.
  • European & international ties: affiliations with CIP, Intergraf, CITPA and FESPA connect Portuguese firms to wider print and packaging networks.
  • National presence: headquartered in Lisbon, with a presence in Porto, covering the country’s main print hubs.

In short, APIGRAF handles the representation-and-networking layer so member firms can concentrate on production. What it does not do is run your prepress; that is where an imposition tool comes in.

APIGRAF’s Heritage and Affiliations

Few trade bodies in Portugal can trace their roots as far back. APIGRAF grew out of a 1974 merger of former guilds, and its long history has tracked the industry through the shift from traditional print into packaging and digital communication — reflected in its recent renaming.

Its affiliations give members reach beyond national borders: CIP ties it to the Portuguese confederation of industry, while Intergraf, CITPA and FESPA connect it to European print, paper-packaging and specialty-print communities. If you print in Portugal, knowing both APIGRAF and these wider bodies helps you find training, standards and market intelligence. Confirm current membership terms on the official site.

Imposition for Portuguese Print Shops: The Everyday Prepress Job

Whether an APIGRAF member runs offset, digital or packaging lines, one task never disappears: turning an approved PDF into a press-ready imposed sheet. Pages must be ordered, rotated and positioned so the sheet folds, trims and collates correctly — a wrong page order or mis-set creep means wasted stock and press time.

PDF Press is a browser-based imposition tool built for exactly this, and it fits Portuguese shops of any size:

  • Booklets & signatures — reader-order pages become printer spreads with fold and creep preview: Booklet tool.
  • N-up & gang runs — flyers, postcards and cards with gutters, marks and visible page order: Grid tool.
  • Tickets, labels & step-and-repeat — repeatable layouts with crop and cut marks, handy for packaging and label work.
  • Printer marks — automatic crop, fold, registration marks and colour bars.
  • Privacy-first, local processing — PDFs stay on the device, which matters for confidential client jobs.

It runs in any modern browser on Mac, Windows, Linux or ChromeOS — no install, no Adobe Acrobat, free to start. That makes it a practical first tool for teams that don’t want a per-seat desktop licence. Compare it against desktop systems in our best imposition software guide.

For most APIGRAF-member jobs, browser imposition with live preview replaces the install-and-license friction of legacy desktop tools.
